March for Free Expression

The next phase

Lazy Sunday Afternoon

There won't be any more posts today, Sunday. Even an eighteenth century French philosopher needs some downtime.

An alternative source of reading might be Nick Cohen's column in The Observer.

Have a peaceful day.

Re Nick Cohen's call to "Dress Danish" - this Ebay seller has a couple of hundred Danish flag sunglasses, £4.99 each + £1.50 p+p. Nothing to do with me, buyer beware etc., just thought I'd mention it.

But, crucially, what does this have to do with the BNP? That's the question on everyone's lips.

"Fortunately, the British National Party is nowhere to be seen and the rally will be filled with democratic leftists, Liberal Democrats, secularists and Iranian and Saudi Arabian dissidents."
One would also hope there will be plenty of democratic centre-rightists and just plain old conservative rightists. Or have we got to the point now where anyone who disagrees with the leftist agenda is branded a far right fascist and member of the BNP. It seems there is a bit of an obsession with the BNP here - surely free speech is free speech regardless of who is doing the talking.

Hey, there will be at least one Christian delegate - myself!
Those glasses are cool. Let's hope the Sun God Re won't let us down next Saturday.

here

The opposition to this march is growing and they seem to think they'll have more people. If some people keep on spreading crap about this march around (i.e. that its racist, anti-muslim etc) they just might get their majority! We all need to spread the word this week and make sure this is a big march.

People are demanding that we keep our mouths shut, demanding new laws and in some cases even threatening us. We have to get out there and make a case, show people that they can be offended and yet live their lives normally.

Certain groups are putting out the word that we are BNP, right-wing fringe racists and that our arguments can be ignored in favour of their "List of Respected Topics" - i.e "List of censored topics that at the very least will cause threats and boycotts and tut-tuts from your neighbors who are going to say 'now they're all boycotting us thanks to you'"

We need to show that we are not some fringe weirdos, this is a march to show the majority of the people that they don't need to be scared of speaking and that freedom of speech is the nature of this country.

Counter protests are great for us because they mean more people on the streets and therefore more chance of media coverage, as long as we show clearly that we are not any of the things they are saying we are.

I want to see members of those groups on vox-pops saying "oh they are all racists" while the news cuts to a view of this march with people of all races, religions, backgrounds etc showing how wrong they are and how everyone can get along without killing each-other despite being insulted.

The more people we have the better, see if people you meet on the way want to come, get asking!

Take a look at some of the debate going on at the MAC. Hope they see why freedom of speech is good and why they should be promoting Mohammad and telling people why hes good instead of telling people that they should respect him.

you need to put the march details in the left hand side bar , so that people know when the march is on and where.

Congrats on bagging the wonderful Mr Tatchell. In light of what "moderate" Al Sistani has been saying in Iraq about gays, Mr Tatchell's appearance is all the more needed.

UKIP Bournemouth have offered support.

"Or have we got to the point now where anyone who disagrees with the leftist agenda is branded a far right fascist and member of the BNP."

If BNP attend, the whole demo will be branded "far-right" by the likes of the BBC. The BNPs neo-Nazi roots are something I find distinctly uncomfortable to my libertarian, freedom loving mind.

Personally speaking, I hope those
fascists keep well away from this.

What the MAC dont realise, is that people like me are very uncomfortable with the likes of Abu Hamza being jailed for what he said - not what he actually did.

call me an old fashioned, Voltaire loving freedom nutter, but i really dont like the police arresting those folks who had those "behead those who insult islam" placards in london recently - even though it took cops weeks to do so.

Much as it is well within my rights to lampoon and criticise Islam, it is well within the rights of MAC and others to expound their beliefs. at least it is then within full public view - rather than underground, in Arabic, in some mosque in Bradford.

that is the core benefit of free speech - something that is clearly beyond the understanding of the current New Labour government.

Looks like Nick has let the cat out of the bag..

"the brown far right"

The question you have to address is not if the BNP are going to show up, but what you are going to do when they do?

Sonic,

You can rest assured that AFA have noted the BNP's intentions.

AFA!!!!!!

Anti-Fascist Action is a violent group with IRA bombers as former members. 'Free Expression' doesn't mean planting bombs outside Harrods.

I hope they stay in their squat in North London.

AFA! Not wanted here!

I'm getting tired of this. It's getting really, really silly.

How on Earth will anyone know if the "BNP attends" ???

No one should be turnng up showing their political colours, whether a socialist, liberal, Conservative, BNPer, National Front or Communist.
