Jerry Springer the Opera (JStO)

Producers of a forthcoming TV documentary about the controversy over JStO will be filming in Trafalgar Square on Saturday.

Still undecided about what to put on a banner? Perhaps consider something about JStO and your rejection of Christian censorship.

Will Stewart Lee be there? If so, maybe he can explain the relativist bullshit he came out with when interviewed about the Danish cartoons on the Today programme:

“When you satirise something you need to at least give it the credit of understanding it, and I think that what’s happened here is that, um - some of the points being made by the cartoons though fairly banal are legitimate. The one where the prophet is blocking suicide bombers from coming into an afterlife by saying “Stop stop! We’ve run out of virgins” - there’s a kind of political point behind that. But I don’t think that the cartoonists have appreciated the massive taboo that you cross by having an image of Mohammed. There’s no historical precedent for that. So I think really in the West Christianity relinquished the right to be protected of its icons the day that they put Virgin Mary snow globes on sale in the Vatican, but in Islamic culture it’s a very different thing... The iconography of Christianity is up for grabs the iconography of - to use a corporate image - Islam’s always been a lot more conscientious about protecting its brand and so I think you need to engage with it as a satirist on its own terms.”

Eh? What "Christian censorship"? IIRC, the BBC did not think twice about airing it - but then who gives a toss about offending Christians?

Isn't Stewart Lee living in hiding?

So you're considering having a placard that criticizes Christian censorship. Why not hold one that also criticizes Islamic censorship? You're not afraid to criticize Christian reactionaries but somehow I think you'll resist carrying one which criticizes Islamic censorship in case you offend Muslim sensibility. Funny that. I have the feeling the march is going to be a waste of time if people start gagging the exact point of the march, it might as well be a march for censorship.

"... it might as well be a march for censorship."

Absolutely! What a pathetic waste of time.
