While some of the organisations that have supported this campaign have been good enough to offer some financial assistance, we are asking everyone to consider helping with the costs of this rally. We need £5M public liability insurance, at a cost of just over £1,000, PA and radio hire, reflective jackets for stewards, materials for making banners and signs and so on. The total budget is going to be in the order of £2,500.
If there is a shortfall in donations, the organisers will probably have to meet this from their own pockets. If there is a surplus, we will look at whether or not we can afford any newspaper advertising as the 25th draws near. If after all disbursements there is still a surplus, we will roll this over into a website that lists all MPs and candidates and sets out their position on the question of freedom of expression, so that their constituents can factor this into their voting decisions.
Please note, we are not a registered charity, so donations are not subject to tax relief.
We are also trying to find a firm of accountants willing to scrutinise the financial transactions to guarantee that there is proper financial transparency and accountability. We have asked one firm to look at doing this on a pro bono basis but if anyone visiting this site knows of a firm that might be prepared to do this we would be grateful if you would approach them and point them towards this site.
A financial statement will be posted next week, with a running total of donations set against the budget, and this will be updated regularly. A final financial statement will be posted after the 25th March 2006.
