I posted yesterday, quoting a comment from another thread that included part of an Auden poem called September 1, 1939. I often think of another section of this poem, especially when I hear arguments that abuse of power, powerlessness and perceived injustices justify new restrictions on our common freedoms, including freedom of expression.
I and the public knowThis poem was quoted often in the aftermath of the 9/11 bombings. It can be read in full, together with two differing views on its relevance, here.
